Italy’s islands are as beautiful as its boot-shaped mainland, offering up dreamy coastlines, fascinating history, stunning landscapes and to-die-for cuisine. Sovereign’s Social Media Executive, Chris, shares his favourite spot in Italy in this 5-minute guide.
Capri is perhaps Europe’s most glamorous island, with more luxe shops than a Dubai mall, and a celebrity roll-call to rival Los Angeles. Nowadays, Capri is increasingly accessible, with regular hydrofoil ferry rides whisking tourists from mainland Italy in as little as 45 minutes. Once on the island, many visitors stay in Capri Town, while the experienced travellers tend to head further into Capri’s hills to find Anacapri – the sleepier, and more peaceful, neighbour.
Culture and History
Capri has its fair share of ancient ruins, but you’ll probably be more interested in more recent eras, such as the 1950s, when the likes of Brigette Bardot and Frank Sinatra could be spotted holidaymaking there. The island still has a throwback atmosphere, with colourful buildings and picturesque, narrow streets left untouched for decades.
Wining and Dining
The majority of the island’s eateries can be found in Capri Town. You’ll find trend-setting eateries with high-end menus, alongside smaller cafes offering more reasonable, traditional fare. Anacapri is worth a trip if you’re seeking a more relaxed experience however, and boasts plenty of authentic restaurants that are a little freer from the tourist trade.
Capri is better known for shopping than anything else. Whether you’re seeking ultra-high-end designer goods, or quirky local gifts like limoncello candy, Capri is the place to go. Names like Hermes, Gucci and Prada rub shoulders with tiny independent shops selling local wares, so it’s a real experience no matter what you’re searching for.
Where to stay
Most people will end up staying back on the mainland, where Capri is a relatively quick hydrofoil ride away. We recommend Sorrento, where hotels like the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria and Grand Hotel Ambasciatori offer luxe stays within reach of the island.
